William Mclaughlin

William (Bill) Mclaughlin, 89, of West Des Moines passed away January 12, 2021 of complications related to Covid-19. He was born November 5, 1931 to Michael and Florence (Hanrahan) Mclaughlin in Belmond, Iowa. Bill graduated Belmond High School in 1949. He enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served four years during the Korean War. On September 18, 1954, he married Margaret Miller at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City, Iowa. They made their home in Wichita Falls, Texas and Warrington, England while he continued his military service. Following his discharge from the service, Bill and Marg made their home in Iowa City, Iowa while Bill attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1960. After graduation, they moved to Des Moines where he worked for the City of Des Moines and the Iowa Development Commission. Bill attended Iowa State University where he received a Master of Science degree in Urban Planning and Renewal in 1969. After graduation, he started his own engineering, urban planning and construction business in 1971. Bill was an active member of the Greater Des Moines Home Builders Association and served as past President and on the Board of Directors for thirteen years. Other organizations Bill belonged to were American Institute of Planners and the Knights of Columbus. Once retired in 1998, Bill and Marg ventured south to Naples, Florida and spent 15 winters relaxing with great friends at Jasmine Club Condominiums. They loved their time in Florida and they loved to travel. Both Bill and Marg can claim they visited every state in the United States. Surviving is his wife, Margaret of 66 years, daughter Ann of West Des Moines, son Mark (Hugo) of Chicago, sister Mary Grant(Pat) of Belmond, sister Audrey Schreurs of West Des Moines, brother Michael (Dianne) of Belmond, sister Patty Nerland of Minneapolis. He is proceeded in death by his parents, brother Gerald and brother Larry. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic a Mass and reception will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers or gifts, WEAR A MASK, PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING, GET VACCINATED.
